Our Programs
Since our founding in 2024, Black Writers for Peace and Social Justice (BWPSJ) has created a dynamic ecosystem of programs designed to nurture Black writers at every stage of their creative and professional journeys. Our initiatives blend literary development, wellness, and activism. We present transformative experiences like the Wellness & Vitality REFRESH event, which integrates writing with holistic healing practices, and the Write, Reiki & Relaxation retreat, a mountain getaway for women writers over 40 to reconnect with their craft and community. Through partnerships with Mahogany Books, Prince George’s County Memorial Library, and DC Public Library, we provide free and low-cost workshops that teach self-publishing, poetry, and memoir writing, ensuring accessibility for writers of all economic backgrounds. Our Rebel’s Zeitgeist digital literary journal and Poets in the Park summer series amplify marginalized voices, while events like the Poet’s Day Party celebrate Black literary culture in vibrant public spaces.
BWPSJ also prioritizes youth empowerment and intergenerational dialogue. Our Youth Media Academy equips high schoolers with skills in storytelling and digital media, fostering the next generation of activist-writers. Meanwhile, monthly newsletters and community readings keep writers connected and informed. Each program is rooted in our mission to advance equity, peace, and justice through creative expression, whether by teaching the business of writing, creating platforms for publication, or simply offering sanctuary for Black voices to thrive. In less than a year, we’ve served over 200 writers—proof that when literature and liberation intersect, transformative change is possible.
